Japan rewards the prepared —
BGCSE can open the door.
Japan asks for 12 years of schooling before university. Botswana's school system is 12 years — 7 primary, 3 junior, 2 senior — so finishing Form 5 with your BGCSE should meet that rule. The most selective English-taught degrees also want A-Levels, the IB or SAT scores, so those still make you far more competitive. Add English-taught degrees that skip Japan's entrance exam, and Japan becomes a real option.
BGCSE should meet Japan's "12-year rule" — confirm with each university
Japanese universities (and the MEXT scholarship) require 12 years of formal schooling or a recognised equivalent such as A-Levels or the IB. Japan's education ministry counts years, not the name of the exam: what matters is that you finished the twelfth year of formal school. Botswana's system is 12 years — the PSLE after 7 years of primary, the JCE after 3 years of junior secondary, the BGCSE after 2 years of senior secondary — so a Form 5 graduate should be eligible to apply. The University of Tokyo, Kyoto University's iUP, Sophia and APU all accept 12 years of school abroad. No Japanese authority names BGCSE in its rules, so use each university's eligibility check before you apply. Being eligible lets you apply; it is not an offer.
Route A — Cambridge A-Levels, then direct entry the strongest application
Add Cambridge A-Levels on top of your BGCSE (the top programmes look for three). Japan names A-Levels as an entry qualification, and they are what the most selective English-taught programmes ask for — the University of Tokyo's College of Design looks for three A grades, and Sophia lets three A-Levels replace the SAT. Route B — Apply on your BGCSE if you skip A-Levels
Because your BGCSE comes after 12 years, you can apply without A-Levels where a programme accepts it — APU's first entry route is "a 12-year standard education curriculum", and Kyoto University's iUP says a 12-year curriculum qualifies you to apply. Expect to add test scores: Sophia and the University of Tokyo's College of Design ask applicants without three A-Levels (AAA at Tokyo) or the IB for the SAT or ACT. Kyoto iUP starts with a 6-month preparatory course and needs no Japanese at the outset, with fee waivers and a monthly allowance (up to ¥120,000) during prep. You should not need one of Japan's designated preparatory courses — those are for countries whose school system is under 12 years.
Target English-taught "SGU / G30" degrees — and skip the EJU
More than 500 Japanese universities use the EJU entrance exam — but the EJU is not offered anywhere in Africa (its test cities outside Japan are all in Asia). The fix is to apply to English-taught degrees, many of them started under the government's Global 30 and Top Global University (SGU) projects. Those funding projects have ended, but the degrees continue at universities such as Waseda, Sophia, Kyoto and APU. They admit on documents and tests, with no EJU and no Japanese required — you sit IELTS/TOEFL instead of the JLPT.

- Japanese-taught degrees usually need strong Japanese (often JLPT N2–N1) plus the EJU.
- English-taught degrees want IELTS or TOEFL — about IELTS 6.0–6.5 / TOEFL 75–90 at APU, the University of Tokyo's College of Design and Kyoto iUP; higher helps. Your BGCSE English grade does not replace the test. Some programmes waive it if you were taught in English for most of secondary school (Sophia: 5 of your last 6 years) — ask whether your school counts; otherwise plan to sit the test.

- The MEXT (Japanese Government) Scholarship fully funds tuition, a monthly allowance (¥117,000 for 2027 undergraduates) and airfare. Undergraduate places go through the Japanese Embassy in your own country — but the Embassy of Japan in Botswana advertised only postgraduate (research) and teacher-training places for 2026 and 2027; we found no undergraduate call. Ask the embassy whether one will open for 2028. Where it runs, it needs 12 years of education (or equivalent) and, for 2027, a birth date on or after 2 April 2002. A MEXT award letter doubles as your visa proof-of-funds.
- Your university applies for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE); you then take it to the Embassy of Japan in Gaborone for your student visa.
- With permission from immigration, students may work up to 28 hours a week (8 hours a day in long holidays) — don't build your budget on more.

- Watch the calendar: for September/October 2027 entry, most applications close between November 2026 and February 2027 (University of Tokyo College of Design 5 Nov, Kyoto iUP 3 Dec, Sophia 4 Dec) — before BGCSE results come out in about March. Many BGCSE students will apply a year later, with results in hand. Ask the Japanese Embassy in Gaborone whether an undergraduate MEXT round will open.
