can already open the door.

Three ways in — pick by your grades and budget

1. Direct freshman entry (case by case). A few four-year universities will consider five or more good BGCSE passes (A*–C) including English as a complete secondary record. None we found names Botswana's BGCSE, and BGCSE-only applicants are rarely competitive — so ask each admissions office before you apply. Add the SAT/ACT only where that university asks (see Tests below).
2. The community-college route — the cheapest, lowest-barrier door a "2+2" Community colleges admit you directly on your BGCSE, usually with no SAT, at roughly US$5,500–12,000 a year in tuition. You do two years there, then transfer into a four-year university as a third-year and graduate with the same bachelor's degree. California's transfer-guarantee schemes (UC TAG, CSU) make this a planned path, not a gamble.
3. A-Levels + SAT for the selective and elite tier highest ceiling The most competitive universities — and all eight need-blind, meet-full-need ones — expect A-Levels (or IB) plus the SAT/ACT. A-Levels also earn real first-year credit at many universities. This is the route to the near-free elite schools below.

Tests: the SAT, and the English rule

• SAT / ACT: many big universities are test-optional and the entire University of California system is test-blind (it won't look at scores) — but a growing list requires them again: MIT, Harvard, Yale, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, the Florida public universities, Dartmouth, Brown and Caltech among them. Princeton and Columbia stay test-optional for fall 2027 entry but will require tests from fall 2028. Community colleges generally need neither. Check each university for the year you apply.
• English — you may not need a test at all. Because Botswana teaches in English, many universities waive TOEFL/IELTS for a good IGCSE / O-Level English grade as a first language (USF asks for A or B, Miami for C or better), or for English-medium schooling. Harvard asks for no English test at all. Where a test is required: IELTS ≈ 6.5, or the Duolingo English Test ≈ 95–125. TOEFL changed to a new 1–6 scale on 21 January 2026, so old targets like "80" no longer apply — Brown, for example, now asks for 5.5. Check each university's new TOEFL band.
• Where to sit them (the catch): there is no confirmed in-person SAT/TOEFL centre in Gaborone — the in-person tests are written in South Africa. The practical fix: the TOEFL Home Edition and the Duolingo English Test are taken from home, and the digital SAT is increasingly home-friendly — confirm the current options before booking.

Money — and the near-free door most people miss

Sticker prices are high, but they are not what every student actually pays.

Eight universities can cost a low-income family almost nothing

A small group of US universities are need-blind and meet 100% of an international student's financial need — Amherst, Bowdoin, Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Yale. For a family on a modest Botswana income, the real bill at these schools can be close to zero — at Harvard, MIT and Yale, families earning under US$100,000 a year pay nothing towards the cost. They are intensely competitive and expect A-Levels + the SAT — but for a top Botswana student they are among the best-value degrees in the world. (Notre Dame is also need-blind for international students, but its page does not promise to meet full need.)

Getting there from Botswana

• EducationUSA's Opportunity Funds Program helps top students from low-income families who are likely to win full US financial aid with the up-front costs that otherwise block them — such as test fees, application fees and flights. We found no 2026/27 call for Botswana, so ask EducationUSA Gaborone whether it is running before you count on it.
• DTEF: ordinary government sponsorship is almost all for study in Botswana. The Top Achievers programme was not scrapped — for 2026/27 it was restructured: undergraduate study only, 144 places, students must take A-Level subjects in the government's priority skills, and the government chooses the country and university (Daily News, 7 July 2026). So you cannot count on it for the USA. Don't build your plan around it — check the current position at tef.gov.bw.

Applying, and the F-1 student visa

1. Apply through the Common App (over 1,200 universities, up to 20 choices) or a university's own portal (the University of California and MIT have their own). Application fees run ≈ $50–100 each; international fee waivers exist but aren't guaranteed.
2. Deadlines: Early Action/Decision is usually 1 November; Regular Decision is around 1 January–1 February; many public universities are rolling. Decisions land by late March and you must accept by 1 May. BGCSE results now come out around March (the 2025 results came on 31 March 2026) — after every US deadline — so you apply on predicted grades. Your school sends the official transcript and predicted grades; the final BGCSE certificate follows on release.
3. The F-1 visa, once you're admitted and hold the university's I-20: pay the SEVIS fee (US$350), complete the DS-160 and pay the visa fee (US$185), then interview at the US Consulate General in Johannesburg. Since 1 August 2026 the US Embassy in Gaborone no longer offers routine visa services, so budget for the trip (transport and a night or two) on top of the fees. (A new $250 "visa integrity fee" has been legislated but, as of October 2026, is not on the State Department's fee list — budget for it in case.) You will also be told to set every social-media account to public so it can be checked.
4. At the interview, prove you can cover the first year shown on your I-20 and — the single most common reason Batswana are refused — show genuine ties to Botswana and a clear plan to return. The visa is for study, not migration; say so and mean it.
