The one country where your BGCSE
can already open the door.
Almost everywhere else asks for one more step before a degree. The US is different — open-admission universities and community colleges take Batswana straight from BGCSE. And a handful of its richest universities can cost a low-income student almost nothing.
There is no single US gatekeeper — admission is school-by-school
Unlike South Africa's exemption rule or the UK's "BGCSE = GCSE level" bar, the US has no national rule that blocks a BGCSE holder from a bachelor's degree. Each university sets its own. Open and holistic universities admit you on five BGCSE passes — the University of Oregon's own Botswana page does exactly this — and every community college admits you directly, usually without an SAT. A-Levels and the SAT aren't a gate; they're what lifts you into the most selective universities, including the few that are nearly free for low-income students. So your real US questions are just two: which tier of university, and how you'll prove the money.
Three ways in — pick by your grades and budget
- Direct freshman entry (open & holistic universities). Five or more BGCSE credit passes (A*–C) including English read as a complete secondary record at universities like Oregon, Purdue, Arizona State and Penn State — you apply straight into first year. Add the SAT/ACT only where that university asks (see Tests below).
- The community-college route — the cheapest, lowest-barrier door a "2+2" Community colleges admit you directly on your BGCSE, usually with no SAT, at roughly US$5,500–12,000 a year in tuition. You do two years there, then transfer into a four-year university as a third-year and graduate with the same bachelor's degree. California's transfer-guarantee schemes (UC TAG, CSU) make this a planned path, not a gamble.
- A-Levels + SAT for the selective and elite tier highest ceiling The most competitive universities — and all eight need-blind, meet-full-need ones — expect A-Levels (or IB) plus the SAT/ACT. A-Levels also earn real first-year credit at many universities. This is the route to the near-free elite schools below.
Tests: the SAT, and the English rule
- SAT / ACT: many big universities are test-optional and the entire University of California system is test-blind (it won't look at scores) — but a growing list requires them again: MIT, Harvard, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, the Florida public universities, Dartmouth, Brown and Caltech among them. Community colleges generally need neither. Check each university for the year you apply.
- English — you may not need a test at all. Because Botswana teaches in English, many universities waive TOEFL/IELTS for an IGCSE / O-Level English grade of A–C as a first language (USF and Miami say so explicitly), or for English-medium schooling. Where a test is required: TOEFL ≈ 80, IELTS ≈ 6.5, or the Duolingo English Test ≈ 95–115.
- Where to sit them (the catch): there is no confirmed in-person SAT/TOEFL centre in Gaborone — the in-person tests are written in South Africa. The practical fix: the TOEFL Home Edition and the Duolingo English Test are taken from home, and the digital SAT is increasingly home-friendly — confirm the current options before booking.
Money — and the near-free door most people miss
Sticker prices are high, but they are not what every student actually pays.

Eight universities can cost a low-income family almost nothing
A small group of US universities are need-blind and meet 100% of an international student's financial need — Amherst, Bowdoin, Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Yale. For a family on a modest Botswana income, the real bill at these schools can be close to zero. They are intensely competitive and expect A-Levels + the SAT — but for a top Botswana student they are among the best-value degrees in the world.
Getting there from Botswana

- DTEF: government sponsorship for overseas undergraduate study is tightly limited and was cut back further in 2025 (the Top Achievers overseas-degree programme was discontinued). Don't build your plan around it — check the current position at tef.gov.bw.
Applying, and the F-1 student visa
- Apply through the Common App (over 1,000 universities, up to 20 choices) or a university's own portal (the University of California and MIT have their own). Application fees run ≈ $50–100 each; international fee waivers exist but aren't guaranteed.
- Deadlines: Early Action/Decision is usually 1 November; Regular Decision is around 1 January–1 February; many public universities are rolling. Decisions land by late March and you must accept by 1 May. Your school sends the official transcript and predicted grades; the final BGCSE certificate follows on release.
- The F-1 visa, once you're admitted and hold the university's I-20: pay the SEVIS fee (US$350), complete the DS-160 and pay the visa fee (US$185), then interview at the US Embassy in Gaborone. (A new $250 "visa integrity fee" has been legislated but is not yet being collected — budget for it in case.)
- At the interview, prove you can cover the first year shown on your I-20 and — the single most common reason Batswana are refused — show genuine ties to Botswana and a clear plan to return. The visa is for study, not migration; say so and mean it.
