โ Study abroad from Botswana
A-Levels in Botswana:
the key that opens everything else.
Two more years of school after BGCSE/IGCSE โ and suddenly the UK, the US, Canada and South Africa's top universities are all reachable. Here is how the route works, using Maru-a-Pula as the best-known example.
Three A-Level passes = direct entry almost everywhere
BGCSE alone stops at Botswana's borders. A-Levels are recognised for direct degree entry in the UK, South Africa, the US (with SATs), Canada, Australia and most of the world. Even better: just ONE year (the AS year) is enough to unlock South African universities โ Maru-a-Pula deliberately structures its programme so SA-bound students can leave after year one.
Qualifying for Maru-a-Pula's sixth form (Form 6)
Admission is decided on your IGCSE or BGCSE results โ both are accepted. The published bar, subject by subject, is high:
- Most subjects need an A or A* at IGCSE/BGCSE in that same subject โ Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (Extended), English (First Language), Geography, Accounting, Business.
- Economics needs an A in Economics plus at least a B in Mathematics.
- Further Mathematics needs an A* in Maths plus a B in Additional Maths.
Deadlines and structure
- External applicants: apply by 31 October (the year before entry). Intake is January, right after IGCSE results.
- Year 1 (AS): 4 subjects. Year 2 (A2): most students drop to 3 โ which is what universities ask for. You cannot take Accounting + Business + Economics together.
What it costs (2025 fee schedule)
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | P41,300 per term (โP124,000/year) |
| Boarding (optional) | P30,000 per term (โP90,000/year) |
| Development levy | P20,000 per year |

Where graduates go: Maru-a-Pula publishes its destinations โ Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Imperial, LSE, Edinburgh, Toronto, UCT, Wits, and Botswana's own UB and BIUST.

Who pays? Scholarships into A-Levels
- DTEF Top Achievers โ the government has historically paid for the country's very best BGCSE/IGCSE performers (roughly the top 80 nationally, around six A* grades) to do A-Levels locally, then funded a full degree at a top university abroad. Check first The programme was under review as of 2025/26 and may be discontinued โ always check the current call at tef.gov.bw before counting on it.
- Debswana Scholars โ Debswana sponsors top students through A-Levels at Maru-a-Pula; selection includes interviews and aptitude testing.
- Maru-a-Pula OVC Scholarship โ full or partial tuition and boarding for academically strong citizen orphans and vulnerable children.
- Mainstream DTEF sponsorship (for tertiary study, 36+ BGCSE points) covers university, not A-Levels โ but it is the safety net the A-Level route sits beside.
Your action plan
- Form 4โ5: check your current/expected grades against the A/A* bars above. If you're at B's, look at Rainbow, Legae or LKC rather than ruling the route out.
- By 31 October of your Form 5 year: submit the external application to Maru-a-Pula (and a backup school).
- If your results are exceptional (5โ6 A*): watch for the DTEF Top Achievers call โ it can make the whole route free.
- During the AS year: if South Africa is the goal, apply to SA universities (their deadlines fall mid-year) โ four D's at AS plus IGCSE English is the published exemption combination.
- During A2: apply to the UK through UCAS (14 January deadline; 15 October for Oxbridge/medicine).
