Two roads to a UK degree —
pick by your grades and your budget.
UK universities don't accept BGCSE for direct entry — they place it at GCSE level. But two well-marked routes exist, and one of them starts directly from your BGCSE results.
BGCSE = GCSE level in the UK
Brighton, Manchester, Sheffield, Surrey and the rest all say the same thing: a BGCSE holder needs either A-Levels/IB or a recognised foundation year before starting a bachelor's degree. (Some also accept one or more completed years at a recognised Botswana university.) Choose your road below.
Road A — A-Levels first, then direct entry highest ceiling
Cambridge International A-Levels (the kind taught at Maru-a-Pula and other Botswana schools) are treated grade-for-grade like UK A-Levels. Three passes = direct entry, applied through UCAS like any UK student.

Cost of this road: two years of A-Level fees in Botswana (see the A-Level page) — much cheaper than a UK foundation year, with a higher ceiling.
Road B — Foundation year, straight from BGCSE fastest
- 5 BGCSE passes at grade B (including Maths and Physics for science routes) → top pathway colleges like INTO Manchester (leads to the University of Manchester).
- 5 BGCSE passes at grade C → standard foundation programmes (Kaplan, Study Group/USIC → Sheffield, Brighton International College, Bucks and many more).
- About 9 months, roughly £15,000–25,000, and the big providers guarantee progression to the partner university degree if you pass.
The English-test rule (this catches people out)
- Botswana is not on the UK's "majority English-speaking" exemption list.
- Foundation route: the student visa requires IELTS for UKVI (the special visa version — a normal IELTS certificate is rejected). Colleges typically ask for 5.0–5.5. It is bookable in Botswana.
- Direct degree entry (after A-Levels): some universities accept BGCSE English grade C or better instead of IELTS (Sheffield says so explicitly); others want IELTS 6.0–6.5. Check each university.

- Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships are for postgraduates only — they cannot fund a bachelor's degree. Don't plan around them.
- Partial undergraduate awards do exist — e.g. the University of Manchester's Global Futures Scholarship for Africa (up to £30,000, Botswana eligible) and pathway-college scholarships.
- DTEF's Top Achievers programme historically funded UK study for the very top performers, but it was under review as of 2025/26 — verify the current position at tef.gov.bw before relying on it.
UCAS mechanics from Botswana
- Everyone applies at ucas.com — up to 5 course choices, one application (≈£28.95).
- Deadlines: 15 October (the year before entry) for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, vet; 14 January for everything else. Many courses still take international applicants after January if places remain.
- The old personal-statement essay is now three structured questions (why this course; how your studies prepared you; what you've done outside class) — 4,000 characters total.
- If your school is a UCAS centre (Maru-a-Pula is), apply through the school. Otherwise apply as an independent applicant and nominate a teacher as your referee — UCAS contacts them directly.
