Two roads to a UK degree โ€”
pick by your grades and your budget.

UK universities don't accept BGCSE for direct entry โ€” they place it at GCSE level. But two well-marked routes exist, and one of them starts directly from your BGCSE results.

The baseline

BGCSE = GCSE level in the UK

Brighton, Manchester, Sheffield, Surrey and the rest all say the same thing: a BGCSE holder needs either A-Levels/IB or a recognised foundation year before starting a bachelor's degree. (Some also accept one or more completed years at a recognised Botswana university.) Choose your road below.

Road A โ€” A-Levels first, then direct entry highest ceiling

Cambridge International A-Levels (the kind taught at Maru-a-Pula and other Botswana schools) are treated grade-for-grade like UK A-Levels. Three passes = direct entry, applied through UCAS like any UK student.

Your A-Level gradesWhat's realistic

Cost of this road: two years of A-Level fees in Botswana (see the A-Level page) โ€” much cheaper than a UK foundation year, with a higher ceiling.

Road B โ€” Foundation year, straight from BGCSE fastest

The English-test rule (this catches people out)

The money, honestly

UCAS mechanics from Botswana

  1. Everyone applies at ucas.com โ€” up to 5 course choices, one application (โ‰ˆยฃ28.95).
  2. Deadlines: 15 October (the year before entry) for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, vet; 14 January for everything else. Many courses still take international applicants after January if places remain.
  3. The old personal-statement essay is now three structured questions (why this course; how your studies prepared you; what you've done outside class) โ€” 4,000 characters total.
  4. If your school is a UCAS centre (Maru-a-Pula is), apply through the school. Otherwise apply as an independent applicant and nominate a teacher as your referee โ€” UCAS contacts them directly.
