Two roads to a UK degree —
pick by your grades and your budget.
UK universities don't accept BGCSE for direct entry — they place it at GCSE level. But two well-marked routes exist, and one of them starts directly from your BGCSE results.
The baseline
BGCSE = GCSE level in the UK
Brighton, Manchester, Sheffield, Surrey and the rest all say the same thing: a BGCSE holder needs either A-Levels/IB or a recognised foundation year before starting a bachelor's degree. (Some also accept one or more completed years at a recognised Botswana university.) Choose your road below.
Road A — A-Levels first, then direct entry highest ceiling
Cambridge International A-Levels (the kind taught at Maru-a-Pula and other Botswana schools) are treated grade-for-grade like UK A-Levels. Three passes = direct entry, applied through UCAS like any UK student.

Cost of this road: two years of A-Level fees in Botswana (see the A-Level page) — much cheaper than a UK foundation year, with a higher ceiling.
Road B — Foundation year, straight from BGCSE fastest
- 5 BGCSE passes at grade B → INTO Manchester's foundation years (humanities, social sciences, law, nursing, psychology), which lead to the University of Manchester. Manchester's own Science & Engineering foundation year asks for 5 B's including Maths and Physics.
- 5 BGCSE passes at grade C → some providers have accepted this (Kaplan, Study Group/USIC → Sheffield, Brighton International College, Bucks and others). We could not re-confirm it in October 2026 — check the provider's Botswana entry page.
- About 9 months, roughly £16,500–25,000 (2026/27 fees), and the big providers usually guarantee progression to the partner university degree if you hit the required grades — check each provider.
- BGCSE results now come out around March (the 2025 results came on 31 March 2026). So you apply directly to the college (not through UCAS), usually on predicted grades — confirm the start dates with the provider.
The English-test rule (this catches people out)
- Botswana is not on the UK's "majority English-speaking" exemption list.
- Foundation route: the student visa requires IELTS for UKVI (the special visa version — a normal IELTS certificate is rejected). Each college sets its own score — INTO Manchester asks for 6.0 for its Business & Humanities foundation. Check the score for your exact course. It is bookable in Botswana.
- Direct degree entry (after A-Levels): some universities accept BGCSE English grade C or better instead of IELTS (Sheffield and Leeds say so explicitly); others want IELTS 6.0–6.5. Check each university.
The money, honestly

- Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships are for postgraduates only — they cannot fund a bachelor's degree. Don't plan around them.
- Partial undergraduate awards do exist — e.g. the University of Manchester's Global Futures Scholarship for Africa: £12,000 a year for 3 years (£36,000) for 2027 entry. It is only for students entering with A-Levels, the IB or an NCUK foundation — not plain BGCSE, not INTO Manchester, and not medicine. Pathway colleges also offer some scholarships.
- DTEF's Top Achievers programme continues in 2026/27, but it has changed: 144 places, undergraduate study only, A-Level subjects must match the government's priority skills, and the government chooses the country and university (Daily News, 7 July 2026). So don't count on it for the UK — check the current call at tef.gov.bw.
UCAS mechanics from Botswana
- Degree applicants apply at ucas.com — up to 5 course choices, one application (£34.50 for 2027 entry).
- Deadlines for 2027 entry: 15 October 2026 (18:00 UK time) for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and vet courses; 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time) for most other courses. The dates move a little each year — check ucas.com. Many courses still take international applicants after January if places remain.
- The old personal-statement essay is now three structured questions (why this course; how your studies prepared you; what you've done outside class) — 4,000 characters total.
- If your school is a UCAS centre (Maru-a-Pula is), apply through the school. Otherwise apply as an independent applicant and nominate a teacher as your referee — UCAS contacts them directly.
The student visa — what's new for Batswana
- Cost: £558 for the visa, plus the £776-a-year health charge, all paid up front (see the money table above).
- TB test: Botswana is on the UK's TB-test list. The test must be done at a UK-approved clinic in Botswana — gov.uk lists them.
- Bank statements: applicants with a Botswana passport usually do not have to upload them. But you must still hold the money, and the Home Office can ask to see it.
- Work after graduating: the Graduate visa is 18 months for anyone applying from 1 January 2027 — so students starting in 2027 get 18 months, not 2 years. (2 years only if you apply by 31 December 2026.)
- Visiting and changing planes: since 14 October 2025 Batswana need a UK visa just to visit — so parents coming for drop-off or graduation need a visitor visa. Changing planes at a UK airport needs a transit visa (£41.50), unless you hold a valid US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand visa.
