β Study abroad from Botswana
A funded degree in Russia β
the preparatory year is the key.
Russia's bridge is unusual: a one-year preparatory faculty that teaches you Russian and your subject basics before the degree begins. Pair it with the Russian Government scholarship β applied for right here through the Embassy in Gaborone β and tuition, the prep year and a stipend can all be free.
BGCSE alone does not enter a Russian degree
First, your BGCSE must be apostilled in Botswana (both countries are Hague Apostille members) and then recognised in Russia by Glavexpertcentr. Second, almost every non-Russian-speaker must complete the 1-year preparatory faculty before a Russian-taught degree β unless you choose an English-taught programme, which can skip it.
Route A β The Preparatory Faculty the standard bridge
The podgotovitelny fakultet ("prep faculty" / "foundation year") runs about 10 months (Sept/OctβJune): intensive Russian (20β25 hours a week) plus subject modules matched to your intended degree β maths and physics for engineering, biology and chemistry for medicine. It ends with a Russian-language certificate (TORFL).
- Cost on the paid route: roughly USD 1,200β3,500 for the year.
- Free under the government scholarship (quota).
Route B β An English-taught degree skip the Russian prep year
Many Russian universities teach full degrees in English, especially medicine (MBBS) and engineering. These can waive the Russian-language prep year. RUDN University alone offers 66 English programmes including English-taught General Medicine. Because Botswana's BGCSE is English-medium, some universities (RUDN's MBBS, for example) do not require an English test at all β confirm per university.
Cambridge A-Levels help your application and document recognition, but they do not remove the Russian prep-year requirement for Russian-taught degrees. (A-Levels are still the most portable bridge across all destinations.)
The fully-funded route β the Government quota
- The Russian Government Scholarship (quota) offers ~15,000 places a year worldwide and covers tuition + a monthly stipend + a dormitory + the prep year.
- You apply through education-in-russia.com via Rossotrudnichestvo β and the Russian Embassy in Gaborone openly invites Botswana students to apply.
- The Botswana government has publicly managed allowances for Batswana already studying in Russia, so this is a known, real pipeline β strongest for medicine and engineering.
The money (self-funded route)
| Cost | Range |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate tuition | β USD 720β6,700 per year (RUDN to ~9,500; medicine top end) |
| Preparatory year | β USD 1,200β3,500 (free under the quota) |
| Student visa | β USD 160 Β· medical insurance β USD 72/year |
Some published living-cost figures look low for Moscow and St Petersburg β budget conservatively.
