A niche option —
brilliant for exactly two things.
We'll be straight with you: very few southern-African students study in Kenya, and for most degrees South Africa is the better move. But for two specific goals, Kenya is genuinely worth a look.
Flight training, and one standout university
Aviation: Kenya is one of Africa's flight-training hubs — schools like the Kenya School of Flying and the Kenya Aeronautical College train pilots from across the continent, with internationally recognised (ICAO) licences at a fraction of European or American flight-school prices. USIU-Africa: a US-accredited university in Nairobi with students from 60+ countries — a way to earn an American-accredited degree without leaving Africa.
Step one for any foreign certificate: "equation"
Kenya doesn't read BGCSE directly. Your certificate must first be equated to Kenya's school-leaving certificate (the KCSE) by a government body:
- KNQA (Kenya National Qualifications Authority) — apply online at qa.knqa.go.ke; about KES 10,000 for foreigners; roughly two weeks.
- Or KNEC (the exams council) — about KES 3,480; note your exam board (BEC or Cambridge) must send result verification directly to KNEC, so start early.
- KNEC will only equate a certificate covering at least 7 subjects including Maths, English, two sciences and a humanity — check your subject count.
- There is no published BGCSE-to-KCSE conversion table — each case is assessed individually. Treat any table you see online with suspicion.
Entry rules once equated
- Degree entry needs your equation to land at KCSE mean grade C+ or better. Strong O-Level-type results have been equated as high as a B, so a good BGCSE can clear the bar.
- A-Level holders: two principal passes = degree entry; one principal pass = diploma entry.
- If the equation lands below C+, the route is diploma first, then upgrade to a degree by credit transfer. ("Bridging courses" are no longer recognised in Kenya — avoid anyone selling them.)
- Foreign students apply directly to each university (the government placement portal, KUCCPS, is for Kenyan KCSE holders only).
- Premium institutions set higher bars — Strathmore wants 6 IGCSE subjects at B including Maths and English (or A-Level ABB) plus its own entrance exam; USIU-Africa wants the C+ equivalent plus an English test (TOEFL 79 / IELTS 6.0 / its own test).

Intakes are flexible by southern-African standards — USIU admits in January, May and September.
Honest bottom line
If your goal is a mainstream degree, South Africa is closer, cheaper (SADC fees) and far more travelled. Choose Kenya if you specifically want flight training or a US-accredited degree at USIU-Africa — in those two lanes it competes with anywhere on the continent.
