โ Study abroad from Botswana
Four European doors โ
and Hungary's opens from BGCSE.
Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Hungary each treat a BGCSE differently. One of them lets you sit its own medical entrance exam straight from BGCSE, and Botswana is a partner in a full Hungarian government scholarship. Here is what each country asks for, what it costs, and when to act. Checked October 2026.
BGCSE alone: one step first โ except medicine in Hungary
With BGCSE only, Ireland wants a foundation year, Germany wants a one-year preparatory college taught in German (the "Studienkolleg"), and the Netherlands' research universities say no (one named foundation route exists). Hungary is the exception: its English-taught medical schools set their own Biology, Chemistry and English exam, so a BGCSE holder can apply.
With 3 A-Levels at C or better or the IB Diploma, you can apply for direct entry in all four. Your grades decide which universities.
| Country | BGCSE alone | A-Levels / IB | Tuition a year (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ฉ๐ช Germany | 1-year Studienkolleg, taught in German | Direct entry (3 A-Levels at C+ in set subjects, or IB 24+) | Mostly free: a semester fee of โฌ70โ430 (โ P1,100โ6,500) |
| ๐ฎ๐ช Ireland | Foundation year first | Direct entry | โฌ19,500โ29,600 (โ P293,400โ444,700); medicine more |
| ๐ณ๐ฑ Netherlands | Research universities: no. One named foundation route | Direct entry | โฌ9,400โ20,600 (โ P140,800โ309,200) |
| ๐ญ๐บ Hungary | English-taught medicine: yes, via the university's own exam | Direct entry | Medicine โฌ15,800โ18,700 (โ P237,600โ280,900) |
Best free route: Stipendium Hungaricum. Botswana is a partner country. It covers tuition, a dorm place or rent allowance, health insurance and a small monthly stipend, for a full bachelor's degree, medicine included. Places for Botswana are few โ reportedly about 6โ20 a year.
Took IGCSE / O-Level instead? On its own it does not give direct entry in Germany (the Studienkolleg again) or the Netherlands, and Ireland most likely treats it like BGCSE โ confirm. In Hungary, Pรฉcs and Corvinus ask Cambridge students for 2 A-Levels plus 3 IGCSEs, so ask each university.
The timing trap
BGCSE results arrive around MarchโApril (the 2025 results came out on 31 March 2026). Most European deadlines fall earlier:
- RCSI Medicine (Ireland) and Dutch fixed-capacity programmes: 15 January 2027
- Stipendium Hungaricum: expected around mid-January 2027
- Trinity College Dublin priority deadline: 1 February 2027
- Some Studienkollegs close early too โ Hamburg's takes applications 1 January to 1 March (confirm the current dates)
So a Form 5 student applies on predicted grades from the school, gets a conditional offer, and sends the certificate when it arrives. For a BGCSE-only applicant, the main exception: self-funded medicine in Hungary closes in May and June, after results.
๐ฉ๐ช Germany almost free tuition
Most public universities charge no tuition, even to students from outside the EU โ only a semester fee. The catch is language: most degrees are taught in German.
What your results open
- BGCSE: the Studienkolleg, a one-year preparatory college with an exit exam. You need 6 general subjects including English, all at E or better, from no more than 2 sittings. Medicine, science and technology also need Maths at C or better and C or better in two of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Studienkollegs teach in German and want German at B1โB2 first, so a student who finishes BGCSE in November 2026 realistically starts the degree in October 2028.
- One successful year at a Botswana university gives direct entry, but only to the same or a related subject.
- A-Levels: 3 at C or better, 2 of them from a set list (languages, maths, sciences, history, geography, economics and others). AS levels no longer count, and your subjects decide which degrees open โ confirm with uni-assist.
- IB Diploma: 24+ points, 6 subjects with 3 at Higher Level, each at 4 or more. Maths at Standard Level shuts out maths, science and technology degrees.
- Language: German-taught degrees need about C1. English-taught bachelor's degrees exist but are few.
| The money | Amount (approx. in Pula) |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Most public universities: semester fee only, โฌ70โ430 (โ P1,100โ6,500). Exceptions: Baden-Wรผrttemberg โฌ1,500 a semester (โ P22,600); TU Munich โฌ2,300โ3,400 a semester (โ P34,600โ51,100) from winter 2027/28 |
| Studienkolleg | Public ones are free; a private one (Paderborn) costs โฌ8,000 (โ P120,300) |
| Money to prove for the visa | A blocked bank account of โฌ11,904 for year 1 (โ P179,000), released at up to โฌ992 a month (โ P14,900) |
| Year 1 estimate (before flights and insurance) | โ โฌ12,500โ19,800 (โ P188,000โ297,700) |
- Visa: at the German Embassy in Gaborone, the only one of these four countries you can do fully at home. Apply online on the Consular Services Portal, then attend an appointment. (TLS in Gaborone handles short visits only, not study.) Checks take up to 3 months, so start the day your admission letter arrives. The embassy's older checklist shows a lower monthly figure โ go by โฌ11,904.
- Applying: through uni-assist โ โฌ75 for the first choice (โ P1,130) and โฌ30 (โ P450) for each extra; a Studienkolleg counts as a choice. The winter-semester deadline is often 15 July; Studienkollegs close earlier.
- After graduating: an 18-month permit to look for work.
- Scholarships for school-leavers: none funds a full bachelor's. The Deutschlandstipendium pays โฌ300 a month (โ P4,500) to any nationality once you are admitted or enrolled. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation pays โฌ992 a month plus insurance to international bachelor's students already in Germany (after semester 1, with German at B2).
- DAAD scholarships are for postgraduates only. No DAAD award funds a full bachelor's for a Botswana school-leaver.
๐ฎ๐ช Ireland foundation year from BGCSE
English-speaking, with generous partial scholarships at some universities. But tuition is high, and the visa needs money shown up front.
What your results open
- BGCSE: a foundation year first. UCD's International Foundation Year asks for an average of B across 5 subjects (at least C in required subjects) and IELTS 5.0. Galway also rates BGCSE at foundation level, with a cheaper foundation year. Trinity lists only A-Levels, the IB, or a US diploma plus SAT from Botswana.
- A-Levels: Trinity A*A*AโABB depending on the course (Medicine A*A*A); UCD from 3 C's; RCSI Medicine AAB.
- IB Diploma: Trinity 30โ40 (Medicine 40); UCD from 24; RCSI Medicine 38 with HL Chemistry at 5.
- English: IELTS 6.5 (6.0 in each band) at Trinity, UCD, Galway and RCSI. Galway accepts BGCSE English at C; Trinity and UCD do not list it.
| The money | Amount (approx. in Pula) |
|---|---|
| Foundation year | UCD โฌ22,250โ26,500 (โ P334,600โ398,600); Galway โฌ13,700 (โ P206,000) |
| Degree tuition | Arts, business, law โฌ19,500โ22,800 (โ P293,400โ343,100); science, engineering, computing โฌ28,300โ29,600 (โ P425,800โ444,700); medicine โฌ54,400โ62,100 (โ P818,300โ934,400) |
| Money to prove for the visa | โฌ10,000 a year (โ P150,400), shown with 6 months of statements โ plus tuition paid before you apply: all of it if under โฌ6,000, otherwise at least โฌ6,000 (โ P90,200) |
| Year 1 estimate (before flights and insurance) | โ P449,200 (arts) to โ P1.09 million (medicine); Galway foundation route โ P361,800 |
- Visa: Batswana need an Irish study visa (since July 2024). Apply online, then send your documents to the Embassy of Ireland in Pretoria. Allow about 8 weeks and don't buy flights first. The fee is R1,200 (โ P970), then โฌ300 (โ P4,510) to register after you arrive.
- Applying: directly to each university, not through the CAO. Trinity opens 1 November 2026, priority deadline 1 February 2027 (medicine too). RCSI Medicine: 1 November 2026 โ 15 January 2027, plus the Casper online test, and you must be 18 by 31 December 2027. UCD: before 1 July if you need a visa.
- After graduating: 12 months to work (Stamp 1G) after an honours bachelor's.
- Scholarships for school-leavers: UCD Global Excellence pays 50% or 100% of tuition for self-funded non-EU students with an offer (2027/28 details due early November 2026). UCD's foundation route takes โฌ2,000โ4,000 off the foundation year and each degree year, up to โฌ20,000. Galway gives โฌ5,000 a year automatically in several schools; Limerick โฌ2,000โ2,500 a year automatically. Trinity takes โฌ2,000โ5,000 off year 1 (not medicine, engineering, science or computing).
- The Government of Ireland scholarship is for master's and PhD students only.
๐ณ๐ฑ The Netherlands A-Levels/IB for research universities
English-taught degrees and a year to look for work afterwards โ but the research universities don't accept BGCSE.
What your results open
- BGCSE: research universities (Groningen, Maastricht, TU Delft) do not accept it. They want 3 A-Levels, the IB, or a first year at university.
- One named foundation route: The Hague Pathway College says BGCSE (AโC in 6 subjects, with at least one A and one B) qualifies for its โฌ16,150 foundation year (โ P242,900) into The Hague University of Applied Sciences โ confirm with the college. The Holland International Study Centre has closed.
- A-Levels: Groningen 3 at A*โC; Maastricht 3 at AโC plus 3 GCSEs; TU Delft 3โ4 with set Maths and Physics.
- IB Diploma: accepted, with subject conditions (TU Delft wants Maths Analysis & Approaches at HL).
- English: IELTS 6.5 at research universities, 6.0 at universities of applied sciences. Botswana is not on their exemption lists, though 3 A-Levels or an English-taught IB usually exempt you.
| The money | Amount (approx. in Pula) |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Universities of applied sciences โฌ9,400โ10,500 (โ P140,800โ158,300); research universities โฌ13,400โ20,600 (โ P201,500โ309,200) |
| Money to prove for the visa | โฌ1,130.77 a month in 2026 โ about โฌ13,569 a year (โ P204,000). The university checks it, often by asking for a deposit |
| Year 1 estimate (before flights and insurance) | โ P359,400โ612,000, plus โ P242,900 if you need the foundation year |
- Visa: the university applies for you โ entry visa and residence permit together, โฌ254 (โ P3,820). You collect the visa sticker at the Dutch Embassy in Pretoria or the Consulate-General in Cape Town.
- Applying: register on Studielink, then on the university's own portal. A school transcript can earn a conditional offer. Deadlines for September 2027: fixed-capacity programmes 15 January 2027; most others 1 May (TU Delft 1 April, Saxion 1 June). Maastricht scholarship applicants by 10 December 2026.
- Check the language: universities are moving some English-taught bachelor's degrees to Dutch, and a government plan to limit them is still being discussed. Confirm your programme is still taught in English.
- Housing: there is a severe shortage โ arrange a room before you arrive.
- After graduating: an "orientation year" โ 12 months to look for work.
- Scholarship for school-leavers: the NL Scholarship gives โฌ5,000 once (โ P75,200) at participating universities โ Groningen, Maastricht, Radboud, Twente, Utrecht, VU, Wageningen and about 24 universities of applied sciences (not UvA, Leiden, TU Delft or Erasmus) โ this is the 2026/27 list; the 2027/28 list is not out yet. Saxion already takes applications for September 2027: 1 November 2026 โ 1 May 2027, by lottery. Many other Dutch scholarships are for master's students only.
๐ญ๐บ Hungary BGCSE โ medicine full scholarship
The most open European door for a BGCSE student, and the only one of the four with a full government scholarship that Botswana takes part in.
What your results open
- BGCSE โ English-taught medicine: yes. Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and Pรฉcs take any recognised school-leaving certificate and choose students by their own online Biology, Chemistry and English exam, plus an interview.
- Pรฉcs says school grades are not considered, but it applies a "12 years of school" rule case by case. Szeged turns away anyone who failed Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or English in the final year.
- Weak in sciences? A pre-medical foundation year: Szeged โฌ6,800 (โ P102,300; 8 months, IELTS 4.5, no exam) or Debrecen's Basic Medicine Course US$7,500 (โ P100,500).
- Other degrees: judged under the 12-years-of-school rule, case by case โ ask each university.
- A-Levels: three, with two sciences at grade A, skip Szeged's entrance exam. IB: Pรฉcs needs the full Diploma; Szeged skips its exam with 5 in two HL sciences.
- English: the medical schools test it in their own exam, so no certificate is needed (Debrecen accepts a letter from an English-medium school). BME engineering asks for IELTS 5.5.
| The money | Amount (approx. in Pula) |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Medicine โฌ15,800โ18,700 a year (โ P237,600โ280,900); engineering at BME โ โฌ6,400โ7,000 (โ P96,200โ105,300) |
| Living | About โฌ600โ800 a month (โ P9,000โ12,000) |
| Money to prove for the visa | No fixed amount: bank statements in the student's name, a notarised family support declaration with proof, or a scholarship โ plus proof that tuition is paid |
| Year 1, self-funded medicine (estimate) | โ US$27,000 at Debrecen (โ P362,000) |
- Visa: a residence permit for study plus a D visa to enter, at the Hungarian Embassy in Pretoria โ in person for fingerprints, appointment booked online, card payment only. Fee โฌ110 (โ P1,650); a decision within 60 days.
- Deadlines: self-funded medicine for 2027 closes after BGCSE results โ Debrecen 15 May, Semmelweis 31 May, Szeged 1 June (rolling), Pรฉcs 30 June.
- After graduating: a 9-month permit to look for work.
- Stipendium Hungaricum (Botswana is a partner country): free tuition, HUF 43,700 a month (โ P1,800), a free dorm place or HUF 40,000 a month towards rent, and medical insurance โ for a full bachelor's in any available field, medicine included. It does not cover all living costs, so families top up.
- Botswana's Ministry of Higher Education nominates the candidates โ check the process with the Ministry. The 2026/27 deadline was 15 January 2026; expect the 2027/28 call between November 2026 and January 2027. You must be 18 by 31 August of the start year. The deadline falls before BGCSE results, so ask the Ministry how pending results are handled.
Paying for it: what is real for a school-leaver
- Open to school-leavers: Stipendium Hungaricum (full); UCD Global Excellence (50โ100% of tuition); Galway and Limerick automatic awards; the NL Scholarship (โฌ5,000 once); the Deutschlandstipendium (once enrolled in Germany).
- Postgraduate only โ not for school-leavers: DAAD scholarships (Germany), the Government of Ireland scholarship, and Erasmus Mundus.
- DTEF: Top Achievers was restructured for 2026/27 โ undergraduate study only, 144 places, and the government chooses the country and university. Ordinary DTEF sponsorship is almost all for study in Botswana. Don't build a Europe plan on it; check the current call at tef.gov.bw.
