Chinese universities admit on a completed senior-secondary (Year-12) qualification. BGCSE sits a step below that, so you add one bridge — then China becomes one of the most affordable, most-scholarshipped destinations open to a Botswana student.
BGCSE alone does not enter a Chinese degree
Chinese universities require a "graduation certificate of higher secondary school, or its international equivalent, qualified for university entrance." BGCSE is at O-Level / IGCSE standard — one level below — so you must add either a university foundation year or Cambridge A-Levels before a bachelor's degree. The good news: a foundation year is built exactly for students in your position, and a real, funded pipeline already runs from Botswana to China.
Route A — University Foundation Year, straight from BGCSE most accessible
Many Chinese universities run a 6-month to 1-year foundation / preparatory programme that accepts students who haven't completed senior secondary, then feeds you into the bachelor's. Several are taught in English, so you can start before you speak any Chinese.

Route B — Cambridge A-Levels first strongest signal
A-Levels are recognised as senior-secondary completion and give you a competitive edge at Chinese universities. They are the most portable bridge you can build — the same A-Levels also open South Africa, the UK, Australia and Japan. (See the A-Levels in Botswana page — you can study them at home.) Whether A-Levels grant direct first-year entry (versus going via foundation) and at what grades varies by university, so confirm with each one.
The language gate — HSK or IELTS
- Chinese-taught degrees: usually HSK 4 (score 180) to apply, rising to HSK 5 by enrolment. The Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana is the natural place to start learning Chinese.
- English-taught degrees: no HSK — instead IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL iBT 72 (higher at some universities). English-taught bachelor's are limited but real, clustered in medicine (MBBS), engineering and business.
- Your BGCSE English credit is not a confirmed substitute for IELTS/TOEFL — plan to sit the test, and ask each university whether English-medium schooling waives it.
The money, and the scholarship

- The Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS/CSC) is fully funded — tuition, accommodation and a stipend. Bachelor's applicants must have graduated from high school and be under 25. Botswana receives roughly 80 scholarships a year.
- New for 2026/27: undergraduate CGS applicants must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) before the deadline.
- Programmes over 180 days use an X1 student visa, converted to a residence permit within 30 days of arrival (you'll need a JW202 form and your admission letter).
