Route A — Foundation Studies year, straight from BGCSE fastest route

Foundation programmes are built for O-Level / IGCSE holders: the minimum entry is a completed O-Level/IGCSE with a pass in English. They run about 12 months, and the big providers guarantee progression to the partner university degree if you reach the grades your degree asks for.

Route B — Cambridge A-Levels, then direct entry highest ceiling

Cambridge A-Levels are treated as equivalent to Australian Year 12 and are widely accepted for direct undergraduate entry, including at Group-of-Eight universities. There is no single A-Level-to-ATAR table you can rely on: each university converts A-Levels its own way (Melbourne, for example, uses its own course score for international students, not the ATAR), so check the grades your course needs on the university's own page. The English-test rule (and the visa catch)

• Foundation English is typically IELTS 5.5 (no band below 5.0), or 6.0 for top-tier/intensive programmes.
• Your Botswana schooling may count as English evidence at some providers — UNSW College lists Botswana as an English-speaking country. We could not confirm any provider that accepts a set BGCSE/O-Level English grade instead of IELTS, so ask each one.
• The catch: even where a provider waives its own test, your student visa may still need one — a Botswana passport is not exempt. The visa asks for IELTS 6.0 (5.5 if your visa is packaged with a Foundation programme), and whether you must show a score depends on the visa's Document Checklist. Most Botswana students should plan to sit IELTS anyway.

The money and the visa, honestly

• The student visa is the subclass 500 (charge AUD 2,500 since 1 July 2026). You can only apply once your provider has issued a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). You must show about AUD 29,710 of genuinely-available funds for 12 months of living, plus first-year tuition and travel — or parents' income of at least AUD 87,856 in the last 12 months, shown by tax documents.
• New since 2 October 2026: most students can no longer apply for another student visa from inside Australia. So put the Foundation year and the degree on ONE visa application (a "packaged" offer), rather than planning to switch later.
• Botswana is not on Australia's low-TB-risk list, so you need a medical exam and chest X-ray with an approved panel doctor. If you are asked for biometrics, you give them in South Africa — there is no centre in Botswana.
• The Genuine Student (GS) requirement (it replaced the old GTE in 2024) asks you to show study is your real purpose, answered inside the visa form.
• Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory. A Standard or Comprehensive Foundation year plus the visa living figure already comes to about AUD 73,000–88,000, before health cover, flights and the visa charge.
• Australia plans for 295,000 new overseas students in 2027; once a provider nears its share, its applicants are processed more slowly — so apply early.

2. Choose your bridge: a one-year Foundation year (fast; leads into the degree if you reach the grades) or A-Levels at home (direct Go8 entry).
3. Sit IELTS — even if your provider accepts your Botswana schooling as English evidence, the visa may still need a score.
4. Aim for the mid-year intake. BGCSE results come out around March, after a February start. Some providers (Trinity, for example) make offers on forecast or mock results, but check whether they will let you start before your final results arrive.
5. Once you accept an offer and receive your CoE, lodge the subclass 500 visa straight away — most higher-education student visas are decided within about four months. Prepare the funds evidence for the Genuine Student test.
