โ Study abroad from Botswana
A degree needs one more step โ
but a college takes you now.
Canada's universities want A-Levels before a bachelor's. But its colleges admit Batswana straight from BGCSE โ and a college diploma transfers into the second year of a university degree. That door is real, and it's open today.
University? One more step. College? You qualify now.
Canada treats BGCSE as a school-leaving (O-Level) credential. For a university bachelor's, the big names โ Toronto, UBC, McGill โ ask for A-Levels (or a completed first year of university). But Canadian colleges are different: they admit a BGCSE holder directly into a two-to-three-year diploma โ Humber College publishes a Botswana equivalency in which BGCSE at about grade C counts as a complete Canadian high-school credential. That diploma then transfers into year two of a university degree. So unlike South Africa or the UK, Canada has a genuine direct door from BGCSE โ it just runs through a college first.
Two ways in
Road A โ College diploma, straight from BGCSE no A-Levels needed
- Colleges (Seneca, Humber and many more) admit you on your BGCSE โ about a grade C, with IELTS โ 6.0 โ into a 2โ3 year diploma.
- That diploma transfers into year two or three of a university degree. Real example: a Seneca diploma transfers into a York University honours degree with up to 45โ57 credits already counted.
- Cheaper, faster to start, and a proven route to the same bachelor's.
Road B โ Direct to university highest ceiling
- Three A-Levels (or IB, or a completed first university year) is the credential Toronto, UBC and McGill ask for.
- The most reachable universities are the most generous on entry: Manitoba needs only two A-Levels plus three O-Levels; Saskatchewan and Alberta are also within reach. McGill's Nursing and Agricultural & Environmental Sciences accept B/C-range A-Levels.
- Have A-Levels but weak English? Pathway years like UBC's Vantage One and Toronto's IFP bridge the language gap (not the academic one).
The English test โ you've probably already cleared it
- Universities ask for IELTS โ 6.5 (TOEFL โ 90; Duolingo โ 120); colleges โ 6.0.
- But Botswana is explicitly on the English-exemption lists at Toronto, UBC, McGill and Manitoba โ four-plus years of English-medium schooling means no test at all.
- And a BGCSE / O-Level English grade of B waives the test at Toronto, McGill, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta (UBC is the exception โ it wants A-Level English).
- If you do need a score, the Duolingo English Test is taken online from home and is the cheapest fallback.
The money โ a college is roughly half
| Cost (international, per year) | Range (CAD) |
|---|---|
| College diploma | โ $15,000โ20,000 (Humber โ $19,000) |
| University bachelor's | โ $30,000โ60,000+ (Toronto Arts & Science $48,000โ70,000) |
| Living costs | โ $15,000โ25,000 |
A college diploma is roughly half the cost of an elite degree โ and it leads to the same place by transfer. Lower-tuition universities like Manitoba and Memorial are the cheapest direct-university options. Government (DTEF) overseas sponsorship is tightly limited and was cut back in 2025 โ check tef.gov.bw rather than assuming it.
Applying from Botswana
- Ontario universities apply through one central system, OUAC โ as an international school-leaver you're a "Group B / 105" applicant (base fee โ CAD$156 for three choices). Universities outside Ontario, and all colleges, you apply to directly. The main Ontario undergraduate deadline is mid-January for September entry; competitive programmes and scholarships close in early December.
- Send your BGCSE statement of results and school transcripts. Still in school? Submit predicted grades for a conditional offer; the final certificate follows on release. A formal credential evaluation (WES) is usually not required just to be admitted.
The study permit โ the rules changed recently
Get an admission offer first, then apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online before you travel. What's different in 2025/26:
- You need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) โ check your school has a DLI number.
- You now also need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) โ your school helps you get it after you accept the offer.
- Proof of funds rose to CAD$22,895 for the year (on top of first-year tuition and travel). A GIC โ a Canadian-bank deposit โ is one easy way to show living costs, but it is optional for Batswana: the old Student Direct Stream that required it ended in November 2024.
- Biometrics (CAD$85) are given at the VFS Global centre in Gaborone; the permit fee is CAD$150; a medical exam is required for Botswana; the visa office serving Botswana is in the region (commonly via Pretoria).
- Canada has capped international student numbers since 2024 โ apply early and get your funds and documents exactly right.
