A degree needs one more step —
but a college takes you now.

Two ways in

Road A — College diploma, straight from BGCSE no A-Levels needed

• Colleges (Seneca, Humber and many more) admit you on your BGCSE — about a grade C, with IELTS ≈ 6.0 — into a 2–3 year diploma.
• That diploma transfers into year two or three of a university degree. Real example: a Seneca diploma transfers into a York University honours degree with up to 45–57 credits already counted.
• Cheaper, faster to start, and a proven route to the same bachelor's.
• Want to work in Canada after you graduate? A college diploma leads to a post-graduation work permit only in fields on Canada's shortage list (for study permits applied for on or after 1 November 2024). University degree graduates have no field rule.

Road B — Direct to university highest ceiling

• Three A-Levels (or IB, or a completed first university year) is the credential Toronto, UBC and McGill ask for.
• The most reachable universities are the most generous on entry: Manitoba needs only two A-Levels plus three O-Levels. Its Botswana entry also lists the Botswana certificate plus a school diploma for its first year (University 1, 70% average in English, Maths and two academic subjects) — that may be a BGCSE route into a university, but we found it on one page only, so confirm with Manitoba before you rely on it. Saskatchewan and Alberta are also within reach. McGill's Nursing and Agricultural & Environmental Sciences accept B/C-range A-Levels.
• Have A-Levels but weak English? Pathway years like UBC's Vantage One and Toronto's IFP bridge the language gap (not the academic one).

The English test — you've probably already cleared it

• Universities ask for IELTS ≈ 6.5 (no band below 6.0; TOEFL 4.5 on its new 1–6 scale; Duolingo 120–125); colleges ≈ 6.0.
• But Botswana is explicitly on the English-exemption lists at Toronto, UBC, McGill and Manitoba — four-plus years of English-medium schooling means no test at all.
• And a BGCSE / O-Level English grade of B waives the test at Toronto, McGill, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta (UBC is the exception — it wants A-Level English).
• If you do need a score, the Duolingo English Test is taken online from home and is the cheapest fallback.

The money — a college is roughly half

A college diploma is less than half the cost of an elite degree — and it leads to the same place by transfer. Lower-tuition universities like Manitoba and Memorial are the cheapest direct-university options. Government (DTEF) overseas sponsorship is rare: Top Achievers continues in 2026/27 (144 places, undergraduate only), but the government now chooses the country and university, so you cannot count on it for Canada — check tef.gov.bw rather than assuming it.

Applying from Botswana

1. Ontario universities apply through one central system, OUAC — one Undergraduate application, and as an international applicant you're in "Group B" (base fee CA$159, plus CA$51 for each extra choice). Universities outside Ontario, and all colleges, you apply to directly (Humber, for example, charges CA$100 for up to two choices and fills places first-come, first-served).
2. OUAC's mid-January date is for Ontario school students only. As an international applicant you follow each university's own deadline — for September 2027 entry, Toronto and UBC close on 15 January 2027 (Toronto recommends applying by 7 November 2026), and UBC's International Scholars awards close on 15 November 2026.
3. Send your BGCSE statement of results and school transcripts. Still in school? BGCSE results now come out around March, after most deadlines, so submit predicted grades for a conditional offer; the final certificate follows on release. A formal credential evaluation (WES) is usually not required just to be admitted.

The study permit — the rules changed recently

Get an admission offer first, then apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online before you travel. What applies now (checked October 2026):

• You need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — check your school has a DLI number.
• You now also need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) — your school helps you get it after you accept the offer.
• Proof of funds rose to CAD$23,448 for one year of living costs (for applications from 1 September 2026, studying outside Quebec), on top of first-year tuition and travel. IRCC asks for bank statements for the past six months showing where the money came from, and checks that funds will last the whole programme. A GIC — a Canadian-bank deposit — is one easy way to show living costs, but it is optional for Batswana: Batswana were never in the Student Direct Stream, which required one and closed in November 2024.
• Fees: permit CAD$150 + biometrics CAD$85 (CAD$235 in total). Biometrics are given at a visa application centre — last reported as the VFS Global centre in Gaborone (confirm when you book). Botswana applicants need an immigration medical exam with an IRCC-approved panel doctor. The visa office serving Botswana is in the region (commonly via Pretoria).
• Going at 17? Each province sets the adult age (18, or 19 in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the territories). A minor may need a custodian — a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. It is optional at 17, but an officer can demand one; under 17 it is compulsory.
• Canada has capped international student numbers since 2024 (for 2026, up to 155,000 permits for new arrivals) — apply early and get your funds and documents exactly right.
